LIFE
Joey was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and grew up in Scarborough with her parents, Jim and Kathy, and sister Heather. Heather currently teaches high school math and science and lives in Mississauga, ON with her husband, Will, and daughter, Sam. Joey and her wife, Baillie, were married in Indianapolis, IN in 2015. Baillie grew up in Zimbabwe and has five siblings who live all over the world. Together, Joey and Baillie have two dogs - a golden chow named Maddie and a shepherd mix named Grizz. Both dogs are products of Dogs XL Rescue and reside with them in Seminole, Florida.
SCHOOL
Joey was accepted to the Birchmount Exceptional Athlete Program at B.P.C.I. in Scarborough where, as a replacement for regular gym class, she learned the intricacies of training in the weight room, on the track, and in the pool as well as strategies for improved nutrition and a basic understanding of the human body. Joey worked hard in the classroom and was accepted to a top-ranked liberal arts school called Williams College. Williams is a small Division III institution located in Williamstown, Massachusetts from where Joey achieved a degree in Psychology. After a few year hiatus from her studies, Joey pursued graduate school with Concordia University, Irvine through which she achieved a Master’s in Coaching and Athletic Administration. Most recently, Joey has completed her Mental Performance Mastery certification.
ATHLETICS
Joey’s athletics began in gymnastics, tree climbing, and tag with the neighbourhood youth. Around the age of 7, houseleague sports came into the picture starting with softball, and hockey followed not too far behind. Joey, her sister Heather, and her cousins were also a part of a curling club and took swimming lessons. Soccer entered the picture in grade four when Joey played for the boys team. She also competed for her school in track and field and ran in the kilometer club during recess.
By middle school, Joey was playing competitive boys hockey and competitive softball while also competing in numerous sports for her school, including volleyball, soccer, track and field, and cross country.
Throughout high school, Joey represented Birchmount on the ice, the ball field, the soccer pitch, and the field hockey field while also competing on competitive travel softball and hockey teams. She also managed to squeeze in a little goaltending with a local houseleague hockey team.
When the time arrived to pursue college athletics, Joey could not select just one sport. Instead, she searched high and low for a school, and coaches, who would allow her to play two sports while she received a quality education. As a Williams College Eph (rhymes with beef), Joey broke numerous school records on the softball field, including single season batting average, hitting .563 to lead the nation her senior season. An all-American on the field and all-conference on the ice, Joey co-captained the Eph hockey squad her senior year.
Following her collegiate graduation, Joey tried out for Team Canada Softball and made it to the final selection camp where she was one of the last cuts. After working hard to improve in the off-season, Joey made the team in 2010, was captain from 2013-2017, and rounded out her twelve year career by returning from Tokyo with an Olympic Bronze medal. Additional professional opportunities include playing for the Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois (2019, 2021) and playing in the inaugural season of Athletes Unlimited (2020).
CAREER
Joey’s career began in Williamstown, Massachusetts as the Assistant Softball Coach and Assistant Women’s Hockey Coach at her alma mater, Williams College.
After one short year, Joey was promoted to Interim Head Women’s Hockey Coach in addition to maintaining her position on the softball staff.
The next season, Joey flipped her roles and became the Head Softball Coach and Assistant Women’s Ice Hockey Coach at Stevenson University in Maryland where she spent five years helping build the brand new hockey program and taking the softball program to the next level.
Joey’s next stop was Head Softball Coach at Lebanon Valley College where she helped out with yet another inaugural hockey season. Joey’s stay at LVC was short-lived as she got recruited for a Division I position one year in.
When COVID hit, Joey began working part-time at The GIANT Company. She later stepped away from her three-year stint at Bucknell, and 2019 Patriot League Coach of the Year award, to fully focus on training for the delayed Olympic Games. The Lewisburg Giant allowed Joey to pick up shifts in between training trips and their support and excitement throughout the most uncertain 15 months was unwavering.
Shortly after returning from Tokyo, Joey headed to Rosemont, IL to be the Lead Facilitator for season two of Athletes Unlimited Softball.
In 2023, Joey returned to her alma mater, Williams College, to assist the softball program for their championship season. The Ephs entered the conference tournament as the three seed and went on to win the NESCAC Championship and later lost to National Runners Up, Salisbury, in the regional final.
Currently, Joey delivers The “Classified C-Suite Team Room”, a Mastermind to empower Female C-Suite Executives to lead authentically. This ten-week program inspires personal growth, professional development, and mindset-centered work to reignite passion at work and inspire top-notch results.
Joey is also in the Coaching Pool for the Canadian National Softball Team and has assisted the team for portions of the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Joey is the National Director of Fielding at Area Scouts and is excited to help grow the sport of softball on the platform while impacting those youth athletes around North America.
Joey’s focus also lies right here; sharing her story, inspiring leaders, and making as much of an impact as the world will allow. Niagara University, Whitworth University, The College of Wooster, The United States Naval Academy, Saint Olaf, Williams College, The Tilton School, and Pomfret School have all hosted Joey for multi-day speaking engagements on campus. Joey has met with organizations over Zoom and served two years as the Collegiate Consultant for the Oak Park Windmills travel softball organization. Joey has created a course for The GIANT Company on “Goal-Achieving”, has partnered with WeCOACH and The Alliance Fastpitch to empower athletes and coaches, and continues to seek opportunities to impact the world around her. Joey spoke at TEDxBoston in celebration of Fifty years of Title IX - you can watch it here!
